๐ TANNER Transport Update | Week 42
The most important transport and logistics news of the week โ short and concise.
๐จ๐ญ SWITZERLAND: RHINE, DIESEL & FUEL SUPPLY
The supply situation in Switzerland remains strained.
๐ข Due to persistently low water levels on the Rhine and Danube, in some cases only individual vessels are operating, carrying around 300โ400 tonnes of cargo. Rail deliveries are also experiencing delays in some cases.
โฝ The supply of petroleum products is generally secured, but the Federal Office for National Economic Supply currently considers the fuel situation to be very strained.
โ๏ธ Particularly relevant: the supply of aviation fuel could tighten further from mid-October.
The supply of protein-based animal feed also remains strained. As a result, the release of compulsory stocks will be expanded from 15 October.
ASTAG updated its diesel price information again on 8 October. Its request to the Federal Council in September for temporary relief measures remains relevant for the transport industry.
๐ For shippers:
Continue to closely monitor diesel, air freight and transport costs, as well as available capacity on the Rhine, rail and road networks.
๐ฉ๐ช GERMAN SEAPORTS: STRIKE RISK OFF THE TABLE FOR NOW
A positive development from Germany:
The collective bargaining dispute at German seaports has been resolved.
Ver.di and the Central Association of German Seaport Operators have agreed on a new collective agreement covering around 11,000 employees.
Ports affected include:
โ Hamburg
โ Bremen / Bremerhaven
โ Wilhelmshaven
โ Emden
โ Brake
This means that the recent risk of an indefinite strike has been avoided for the time being.
๐ For shippers:
Planning reliability at German seaports has improved again.
๐ฎ๐น ITALY: CRITICAL STRIKE WEEK FOR FREIGHT TRANSPORT
This week will be particularly important for SwitzerlandโItaly traffic.
๐ด 13 Oct, 06:00 to 14 Oct, 05:59
SBB Cargo Italia โ nationwide 24-hour strike in rail freight transport
๐ด 14 Oct
General strike in Tuscany โ rail freight transport also affected
๐ด 15โ16 Oct
48-hour strike in the Naples / Salerno port system
๐ด 16 Oct
Poste Air Cargo โ nationwide 24-hour strike
๐ด 16โ20 Oct
Regional stoppages in road freight transport in Sicily and Calabria
๐ For shippers:
Plan rail and intermodal traffic to northern Italy early. For affected routes, road alternatives and additional transit time should be considered.
๐ STRAIT OF HORMUZ: SECURITY SITUATION CONTINUES TO DETERIORATE
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the biggest current risks to global supply chains.
As of 9 October, the IMO had already recorded:
โ ๏ธ 100 confirmed maritime incidents
โ ๏ธ 24 seafarers killed
Further tanker attacks were also reported on 10 and 11 October.
The number of vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz has now fallen to its lowest level in more than two months.
๐ Possible consequences:
๐ฐ higher war-risk and insurance surcharges
โฑ๏ธ routing and schedule changes
๐ข reduced available capacity
โฝ additional pressure on energy and diesel prices
๐ For shippers:
Check Middle East routings and surcharges individually before booking.
โ๏ธ RIYADH: ATTACKS IMPACT AIR FREIGHT
Air freight is also increasingly affected by the security situation in the Middle East.
Following several attacks on Riyadh Airport, international airlines have cancelled or temporarily suspended services.
The Lufthansa Group initially suspended flights to Riyadh until 16 October. Other international airlines have also reduced services.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has expanded its warnings regarding Saudi airspace.
๐ For shippers:
For air freight shipments to Saudi Arabia, check capacity, routing and onward connections before booking. Short-notice changes and higher rates are possible.
๐ก TANNER LOGISTICS ASSESSMENT
From our perspective, five points are particularly important this week:
๐จ๐ญ Monitor the Swiss fuel and Rhine situation
๐ฎ๐น Plan Italy traffic early
๐ฉ๐ช Easing of the situation at German seaports
๐ Hormuz remains the biggest global sea freight risk
โ๏ธ Middle East air freight is increasingly affected
For shippers:
โ
plan early
โ
secure capacity
โ
check strike activity
โ
build in time buffers
โ
keep alternative routings available

๐ IN BRIEF
๐ฉ๐ช German seaports:
The collective bargaining dispute has been resolved โ the previous risk of an indefinite strike has been avoided for now.
๐ข Suez / Red Sea:
Some AsiaโEurope services are gradually being routed back through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. Shipping lines emphasise, however, that each passage remains subject to a security assessment.
๐จ๐ญ Diesel:
ASTAG continues to monitor developments on a weekly basis. Fuel remains one of the most important cost drivers in Swiss road transport.
